There are
several underlying themes in Forgetting Jake, and I'll just cover a couple the
major ones.
First, of all is the longing for something
different, or you can't go home again. Jake liked the idea of being a star, but
I think he was bothered by the friends and agents/managers who only care about
the money he brings in, the music and indeed Jake himself aren't important to
them. Deep down he longed for a simpler life like the one he had before fame,
playing in dive bars, maybe even teaching others, so when he ended up in
Carter's Pass he had the change to become the person he always wanted, and of
course the temporary loss of memory enabled him to experience that life he
wanted.
Jake wasn't looking for love, but like someone once said: 'love always happens while we're busy making other
plans.'
Ben and his son grew to care/and eventually fall
in love with him. Ben is my favorite character in
the story. In my fantasy world, Ben is the kind of guy I would have loved to
meet in real life. He's stable, secure with himself and his sexuality, not easy
in a small town. He loves his son, and family is important to him. That's the
other major theme: The importance of family. Those we are born into, (Sam and
Aunt Emily)and the family with make along the way (Becca and Sheriff Wally)
They are the people who love and support Ben and Jake along the way. I
can imagine having such awesome family and friends...How about you?
